Derivatives Market

In February 2011, Saint-Petersburg Exchange and Moscow Exchange (RTS Stock Exchange at that time) teamed up to launch on-exchange trading in futures contracts on commodities. Within the framework of this cooperation Saint-Petersburg Exchange acts as the organizer of trading, RTS Clearing Center performs clearing, and RTS Settlement Chamber is responsible for settlement of transactions. There are plans to introduce new contracts on the basis of this joint project, including both commodity and financial instruments.

The first futures contract was launched on diesel. This was a cash-settled contract on Kortes Index of oil products prices in Russia. Then contracts on such commodities as wheat, corn, soybeans, cotton and gasoil were introduced. All these instruments are quoted and settled in Russian rubles.

The commodity futures are targeted at companies of the real economy sector (producers and consumers of commodities).

• futures on diesel;
• futures on gasoil;
• futures on wheat;
• futures on corn;
• futures on soybeans;
• futures on cotton

Trading is held in the trading system of FORTS Derivatives Market with the use of its risk management tools. This makes it possible to calculate a single cash position for a trading participant across all markets. Moreover, FORTS members who are registered as Special Clearing Members of the FORTS commodities section or as General Clearing Members do not need to make additional contributions to the Contingency Fund of the RTS Clearing Center.

Trading in commodity futures is open on Saint-Petersburg Exchange from 10.00 am to 11.50 pm Moscow time. Such long trading hours enable market players to react to the latest world news in a timely fashion and carry out arbitrage strategies on global trading venues including CME, NASDAQ and others. At any time during a trading session market-makers support two-sided quotes for the commodity futures with tight spreads.
